New Year’s Resolutions For 2009
I honestly don’t know that I am exactly a proponent of New Year’s Resolutions just because of the fact that those three words usually set you up for failure, or in my experience they have. Still, now that the Year of the Ox is on it’s way, and 2008 is behind me I find it pertinent to make some significant changes to my life, or changes that will enrich my life, or something to that effect, so here goes:
More Blogging
I always like to keep in practice with my writing of course, but it’s been a challenge for me to blog with regularity over the years just because I have found that the more I blog the less creative room there is for personal writing projects such as spoken word pieces, and story pieces. Still there has gotta be a balance between blogging and other creative projects and that is something that I am going to resolve to work on as this year progresses.
Getting Healthy
I was well on my way for a chunk of 2008, and then thanks to a move in the summer and adjusting to a new work schedule things got thrown off. However this week I am visiting a barber, and saying goodbye to my fro, firstly because the fro makes me look like a madman or criminal, but secondly because I plan to go back to the gym, and I only workout with short hair considering how profusely I sweat with this fro on my head it would itch like crazy
That would be the first part of it, the active part. The second part of it is eating right, and let me say it’s a bonus to be in a relationship, because my girlfriend is very supportive, and extremely knowledgeable about what to eat and what not to eat. We are using one another as support, so for the first two months we are committing to going to the gym at least three times a week. I don’t know that the world will ever see a skinny Val, but I am just trying to get to the point where i don’t feel winded after taking a set of stairs.
Reading More Books
Another thing my girlfriend and I have committed ourselves to is tackling the Canada Reads list. I prefer to do this with her rather than continue with the book club I had signed on with as their selection is for the most part wretched. There seems to be some really cool titles on that list, with a lot of interesting topics and versatility. I think this will aid in getting my frequency back to what it was when it comes to reading books. I must also remember to frequent, used book stores more than Chapters, and Indigo, though, sometimes there’s just something you gotta get your hands on.
Travelling
It’s going to be hard with my current employment situation as I am only alotted a certain amount of days this year for my vacation, but I am seriously gunning to make the Toronto Poetry Slam team this year because I would love to go to West Palm Beach Floirda for the nationals, and Victoria, BC for CFSW. My making the slam team or not will basically set the stage for how hard I am going to hustle gigs this year. If I am on the team, well that means there will be stuff to perform and compete in, but if not it will mean me hustling my own gigs (which I am used to), but I will endeavor to try for a feature per month, and try for at least two out of town somewhere, because let’s face it, out of town gigs rock!
So there you have it, I don’t think it’s too demanding of a New Year’s Resolution list, and I have faith that this year is gonna be a better one than last year. I know it’s hard to look at the news and believe otherwise, but the way it seems like these days is the only news to report is bad news, so don’t believe the sky is falling just yet, I certainly don’T. Besides, these days there have been more than a few more than obvious signs for me to not believe otherwise.
